A bird's eye view of Atoll of Ether

Atoll of Ether is a cross-platform world created by Maebbie. It was published in 2019 and among the first few to have an Android version ready, shortly after VRChat enabled cross-platform compatibility.

Design

As its name suggests, this world is located on an atoll-shaped foundation in the middle of the ocean. From its spawn area, one side of a colorful town is visible, which can be fully traversed through various alleyways and crossed through via a short tunnel.

On the opposite of this, a Café can be found, the main road is going up and along its second floor.

Secret area

The sky is decorated with long lines stretching far into the distance. When following them all the way to the top a secret area can be found.

Community

As one of the first cross-platform worlds Atoll of Ether attracted many, who only recently had joined the VRChat community with their Quest 1. This resulted in the majority of visitors visiting using a Quest, during a time when PC users still made up VRChat's majority overall.

Technical details

Atoll of Ether is built from the ground up to be a heavily optimized cross-platform world. All textures used are contained within a Single Atlassed Texture, which only requires 1 material with one of VRChat's provided lite shaders to render. To add an additional night version to Android, a workaround was used to bake light under different lighting conditions on 2 respective copies of the same geometry.

Along with statically batching objects and utilizing occlusion culling this world remains among the most optimized to date.

A time-lapse video is available, which showcases the entire creation process.
