The Global Sign Language Community (GSLC) emerged from efforts to combat discrimination faced by Deaf individuals within certain groups in the Deaf and signing community. Getomeulou and Nemsi, among others, encountered significant challenges when applying for staff roles, including barriers due to perceived deficiencies in language and writing skills, despite their proficiency in American Sign Language<ref>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Sign_Language</ref> (ASL) and meeting high standards for bilingual and English proficiency. In contrast, hearing applicants were often hired more quickly.
