Furry avatars are used primarily by the furry community in VRChat, and strongly resemble animals with anthropomorphic (human-like) features.
While some consider certain anime avatars (used by fans of Japanese animated media) that have animal-like features part of this category, the primary difference is that furry avatars build on an animal base and add a limited amount of human features, while anime avatars typically start from a human base and add small amounts of animal-like features, e.g. cat ears and tails. This collision of aesthetics are defined as kemonomimi, nekomimi, or simply catgirls.
It's difficult to draw an exact line on which avatar constitutes which, especially if both human and animal-like features are present in equal amounts, and categorizing avatars is ultimately up to the community and the avatar creators.
