What are avatars
Avatars are the character models used to represent yourself and others inside of VRChat.
They are how people will see and interact with you in-game. Avatars are a fun way to express your personality or try out a new one.
The VRChat community has created a wide variety of avatars in different styles and aesthetics. Try exploring the Avatar Worlds category in the Worlds tab to find one that suits you best!
How to change avatars
When you first join the game, you will be in the Default Robot avatar and shown a variety of official VRChat avatars that you can click on, but these are not the only options available.
Featured List
VRChat provides a list of featured public avatars. They are optimized and customized to fit multiple styles of characters. You can try them on by going to the Avatar section, then to Public.
These avatars come from the Avatars For Everyone Jam that happened in March 2023.
Prior to that time, some avatars were available and provided by some other VRChat creators. //This section needs more details//
Once you have found an avatar that you want to use, select it and confirm with the “Change into Avatar” button.
Cloning
When you go around VRChat, you may find someone with a fun avatar that you would want to get for yourself. This is when you want to “Clone” the other user's avatar.
To do so, select the other user and use the “Clone avatar” Button.
If the button isn't available that can either mean that the user disabled the cloning feature or that the avatar they are using is private. This is the case when the avatar was specifically uploaded to their account.
Pedestals and Avatar Worlds
You can also find avatars in the worlds you are visiting.
These avatars are shown on pedestals with a preview of them that you can click to clone.
Avatar pedestals can be found while exploring worlds in the game. You can also create your own pedestals when making your own world.
Platform compatibility
VRChat avatars are built differently for PC than for Mobile. This mean that the avatars are built for a specific platform, and so depending on what device you are using to play the game, you may not always be able to use or see some avatars. Those differences are mostly due to Quest and Android limitations. You can find more details in the following resources.
Creators can configure an avatar to be compatible with multiple platforms by uploading multiple versions of the same avatar ID1).
If an avatar can't be shown to the user, it will first try to display an Imposter2) of that avatar. If no imposter has been generated, the user will instead be displayed as a fallback avatar.
Fallback avatars can be changed in the Avatar menu.
Performance ranking
Avatars are ranked by performance thresholds. They go from Very Poor, to Poor, to Medium, to Good, to Excellent.
You can find more details on the official documentation at Avatar Performance Ranking System
Those performance ranks are determined by VRChat and may be subject to change.
Creating/uploading avatars
You can customize your experience by uploading your own content as long as it follows VRChat TOS.
To do so you first need to have the rank of New User, then you will need the various tools that won't be described in this section.
A more detailed guide on what you can do is available on the Creators docs at Creating Your First Avatar
Once you have an uploaded avatar, you will be able to find them in the “Uploaded” section of your avatar list.
