WHO IS OBSIDIAN KING

OBSIDIAN KING is a French-Canadian VRChat community member, longtime bouncer, and founder of The Obsidian Night Bar.

Usually seen as a massive Godzilla-Spartan avatar, OBSIDIAN is known throughout the VRChat bar scene for his years spent working doors, welcoming guests, and somehow appearing exactly where people least expect him. He is also well known for peeking around corners, hiding in rafters, observing from unusual locations, and moving through bars so quickly that some people joke he teleports.

Despite his intimidating appearance, OBSIDIAN is generally known as a laid-back, approachable, and social person who enjoys meeting new people and helping others feel welcome.

He is also a human cat who loves to purr and enjoys head pats.

FIRST STEPS INTO VRCHAT AND THE MIDNIGHT BAR

OBSIDIAN Early days as Bouncer

OBSIDIAN was first introduced to VRChat in mid-December 2023.

Shortly after joining, he discovered the VRChat bar scene and quickly became fascinated by the role of the bouncer. Early in his VRChat experience, he joined a group known as Demon Time Right Time, where he was welcomed as a bouncer and introduced to the wider community.

What began as curiosity quickly turned into a passion.

Within only a few days, OBSIDIAN found himself spending most of his free time in VRChat bars, often remaining active for more than 14 hours a day. As he visited more communities, he met people from across the bar scene and built friendships throughout VRChat.

During this period, many friends and coworkers encouraged him to start a community of his own. Although initially reluctant, he eventually agreed after considerable encouragement from those around him.

The result would become The Obsidian Night Bar.

Even before opening, the group attracted over 550 members within its first 20 days, demonstrating strong interest from the community.

On February 17, 2024, The Obsidian Night Bar officially opened its doors.

REPUTATION IN THE BAR SCENE

Before becoming known as a bar owner, OBSIDIAN was known as a bouncer.

Throughout his early VRChat experience, he spent countless hours working doors, welcoming guests, helping staff, and assisting newcomers across numerous communities. Because of the amount of time he spent in bars, many people became familiar with him long before they ever learned the name of the community he would later create.

Over time, OBSIDIAN became associated with a style of bouncering focused on hospitality, consistency, and presence. Rather than remaining behind the scenes, he preferred spending time among guests, talking with newcomers, and helping create a welcoming atmosphere.

To many people, OBSIDIAN became more than just staff at a door. He became a familiar and recognizable presence throughout the VRChat bar scene.

WHAT THE COMMUNITY SAYS

OBSIDIAN Night BAr Community

In March 2025, members of The Obsidian Night Bar community were invited to describe OBSIDIAN and explain what they felt he brought to VRChat and the community.

Although the responses varied, several themes appeared repeatedly.

Many described OBSIDIAN as approachable despite his intimidating appearance. Others described him as caring, protective, dependable, laid-back, and someone who genuinely wants to see the people around him succeed. Several members compared him to a giant teddy bear, while others described him as a large black cat, a big kitty, or simply the bar pet.

Many responses also focused on the comfort he brings to the entrance of the bar. Community members frequently mentioned his calm demeanor, welcoming attitude, and ability to make people feel at ease when arriving.

Not every description was serious. Community members have also referred to OBSIDIAN as:

• Walmart Ryan Reynolds
• A groovy giant
• A big stupid lizard
• Clifford the Big Red Dog if he were a large black cat
• Sentient beef stew

Despite the variety of descriptions, most agreed on one thing:

OBSIDIAN has become a familiar and recognizable presence within both The Obsidian Night Bar and the wider VRChat bar scene.

The Obsidian Phenomenon

Another recurring theme among community members is OBSIDIAN's tendency to seemingly appear and disappear without warning.

Many visitors have experienced turning around only to find him suddenly standing behind them, only for him to be somewhere else entirely moments later. Others describe seeing him on one side of the bar, blinking, and then finding him in a completely different location.

Whether through speed, timing, or simply years of practice navigating crowded bars, OBSIDIAN has developed a reputation for showing up where people least expect him.

This habit has become a running joke within the community and has led to one of the most commonly repeated phrases associated with him:

"He's behind me, isn't he?"

For many regulars, unexpectedly finding OBSIDIAN somewhere nearby has become part of the experience of visiting the bar.

MASCOT OF THE BAR

Over time, OBSIDIAN gradually became something more than a regular patron, staff member, or owner.

For many visitors, he became part of the environment itself.

Whether quietly sitting near the entrance, peeking around a corner, hiding beneath a table, watching from the rafters, or purring somewhere nearby, many regulars came to expect that OBSIDIAN would be somewhere in the room, even if nobody knew exactly where.

Because of this, OBSIDIAN eventually became regarded as the unofficial mascot and bar pet of The Obsidian Night Bar.

BEING A DRINK OWNER AND A BAR OWNER

As The Obsidian Night Bar continued to grow, OBSIDIAN wanted to contribute something unique to the community.

Working alongside his friend Night Phoenix and later collaborating with Jmelt Kurisu, he developed the concept for a drink that would represent both himself and the role that originally made him well known throughout the bar scene.

The result became The Bouncer.

The drink depicts a miniature Spartan-Godzilla version of OBSIDIAN carrying a large cauldron of molten obsidian while continuously blasting it with a radiation beam to keep it boiling.

The name was chosen to honor the role that had become most closely associated with him throughout VRChat.

When asked how it feels to own a drink, OBSIDIAN's response remains simple:

"I don't feel anything special about being a drink owner. I'm just glad our community can enjoy something fun."

BEYOND THE MIDNIGHT BAR

Although The Obsidian Night Bar was founded within The Midnight Bar, OBSIDIAN has long expressed a desire to provide even more experiences for his community.

To help achieve that goal, OBSIDIAN and Night Phoenix began development of a dedicated bar and club world designed specifically for the community.

The project was created with the intention of expanding beyond existing venues and creating experiences tailored to the people who call The Obsidian Night Bar home.

For OBSIDIAN, the project represents a continuation of the same goal that inspired the creation of the community itself: bringing people together, creating memorable experiences, and giving visitors a place they can return to again and again.

IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY

What began as a new VRChat user discovering the bar scene eventually grew into one of the larger independent bar communities in VRChat.

Through his work as a bouncer, organizer, and founder of The Obsidian Night Bar, OBSIDIAN helped create a space where thousands of members have met, socialized, and formed friendships.

While many people know him for his avatar, his habit of hiding in impossible places, his ability to seemingly appear out of nowhere, or his signature drink, others know him as one of the people who helped build and maintain a community that continues to bring people together.

FUN FACTS

• It's Possible to find OBSIDIAN peeking behind the corner to the bathroom or any other corner in any random bar. He can sometimes hold that position for hours.
• Sometimes you might find a Bouncer drink behind your bar with your jacuzzi unlocked without ever catching a glimpse of OBSIDIAN.
• Obsidian's original favorite drink is the Dealer.
• Unless he never had one before and it's handed to him by the original creator, OBSIDIAN will never drink any other drink but the "Dealer" and "The Bouncer".
• OBSIDIAN will occasionally be found at .20 meters tall on the counter holding "The Bouncer"
• Rumors are, someone is hiding inside one of his pockets.
• If you look at the ceiling of a bar you could catch a glimpse of OBSIDIAN's tail.
• Sometimes OBSIDIAN can be found in the rafters over the bar or under the round table!
• OBSIDIAN used to be seen at the bouncer position every day in almost every bars. Now he Likes to see people enjoying his craft.
• OBSIDIAN tried bartending before, HE HATED IT! His fingers would break the fizz machine.
• Have you ever seen OBSIDIAN STANDING! It's Scary!
• Whats this sound you say? Some people call it a door stop, others an engine trying to start and some call it the comforting sounds of OBSIDIAN purring like a soft cat.
• OBSIDIAN loves The Midnight Bar some say you might never see him out of it!
