Items are objects that users can spawn within a world, e.g. toys, tools, gadgets. They can be managed in the Inventory. Items are divided into two categories: Props and Companions.

Spawning

Items submenu in Action Menu

Items can be spawned from the Items submenu in the Action Menu or from the Inventory. Users can spawn only one of each item they have. All items spawned by a user are removed after they leave the instance.

Item spawning or visibility can be affected by being:

  • Disabled by the world.
  • Disabled by a group moderator in a group instance (but can't be forced on if disabled by the world).
  • Hidden locally by an individual user.

There are two categories of items, each described below.

Props

A Prop is the default type of item: an object that a user spawns into a world. While offering a range of different features, props can be artificially grouped by their properties:

Placeable items

A placeable item can be placed on a floor in a world. It cannot be spawned on walls, ceilings or on other users.

Pickup items

A pickupable item can be grabbed by the user and sometimes other users too.

Consumable items

A consumable item gets destroyed after being placed and activated. It can stack in the inventory.

Companions

A Companion is a pet-type item that follows the user around. These items have a distinct "Companion" label in the Shop. A Companion stays spawned and follows the user between instances rather than needing to be spawned again each time, and only one Companion can be active at a time. Companions include a repositioning system, custom spawn and despawn animations, and following behavior, and can be customized from their Details screen in the Quick Menu, a dedicated section of the Action Menu, or from the Inventory. Unlike Props, Companions cannot be hidden or disabled by worlds or instances, though a user can hide their own Companion or those of other users.

Content settings

World creators can disable items in the "Default Content Settings" section by editing a world on the website, in case they are causing issues or are undesirable. Props can also be disabled by ability from the World Details page on the website; the first available ability category is "Props that Modify Player Movement", which covers props that change a user's movement speed, add the ability to teleport, or otherwise affect movement. VRChat has indicated that additional ability categories may be added in the future.

A dedicated "Item" Unity layer is where items spawn. Previously named "reserved3" in older SDK versions.

Portable Winterizer

The "Portable Winterizer" was the first consumable item that was available for purchase with VRChat Credits. On December 10, 2025, the item was changed to be a permanent, infinite use item instead of a consumable, after community feedback was taken into consideration.[6]

Users that purchased, or were gifted, the "Portable Winterizer" were granted a non-consumable version of the item. The consumable version of the item is still available in user's inventories.
