The '''Strange Pear Gallery of Fine Arts''' is a community-run virtual art gallery in [[Special:MyLanguage/VRChat|VRChat]], created by Oz Pearsall. It operates similarly to a physical small-town art gallery, allowing artists to submit and sell their work while keeping all proceeds from sales. Pearsall, a gouache painter, has been credited with helping to repopularize physical painting commissions of virtual avatars.<ref name="immersivism-history">[https://www.immersivism.com/history "History"] on ''Immersivism''. The Strange Pear Gallery of Fine Arts is a community-run virtual art gallery in VRChat, created by Oz Pearsall. It operates similarly to a physical small-town art gallery, allowing artists to submit and display their work. The gallery hosts monthly gallery show openings with live music, twice-weekly open houses, and a variety of special events. By its third anniversary in September 2025, over 140 artists had displayed nearly 2,000 pieces at the gallery, which had grown to more than 4,000 group members.[1]

History

Founding and VRU Oasis era (2022–2024)

The Strange Pear Gallery opened on September 15, 2022, housed within VRU Oasis, a VRChat world created by TheCastle. Its first event lasted two hours.[1] Over time the gallery grew into a regular gathering point for the VRChat art community, described as one of several "virtual salons for users to attend and share work with."[2]

Standalone world (2024–present)

In May 2024, the gallery announced it would leave the VRU Oasis to become a standalone VRChat world, citing space constraints in the original venue. A separate area called "The Pear Grove" was established in VRU 2.0 as a thank-you to TheCastle.[1]

The new Strange Pear world, built by Spoonie and themed as a repurposed factory in the Appalachian Mountains, opened to the public on July 4, 2024, debuting with Gallery Show 22, "Hidden Realms," featuring a record 26 artists.[1]

Gallery shows

Gallery shows are numbered sequentially and each carries a unique theme name. At each opening, entirely new art by 15-27 artists is displayed alongside a solo exhibition by a featured artist and a live musical performance. Art rotates entirely between shows.

As of April 2026, the gallery has held over 40 numbered shows. Show 30 in March 2025 marked a milestone of 30 consecutive monthly shows with more than 110 artists and 1,650 artworks displayed. The first show held in the standalone world was Show 22, "Hidden Realms," on July 4, 2024. The final show in the original VRU Oasis venue was Show 21, "Mind Palace," on June 6, 2024.

Special events

Beyond its regular programming, the gallery has hosted art workshops, figure drawing classes, comedy art classes, poetry nights, ambient sound performances, and themed social events. Anniversary celebrations in September each year feature extended six-hour events with workshops, talks, and performances by multiple musicians and guest groups. The gallery's one-year and two-year anniversaries both followed this format, with the one-year event in September 2023 including art workshops, yoga, storytelling, and a live particle-art performance.

Since January 2024, the gallery has also hosted "Cognitohazard", a monthly open-mic night for experimental and avant-garde music.

Community engagement

Charity events

The gallery has organized charity raffles and fundraising events, including an Extra Life raffle in November 2023 for children's pediatric care, a Keystone Opportunity Center benefit in November 2024, and a Midnight Masquerade charity ball for the American Heart Association in April 2025.[1] In 2025, the gallery participated in a collaboration with the Femboy Host Club benefiting The Trevor Project, which raised over $50,000.[1]

Collaborations

In October 2025, the gallery participated in the VRChat Group Fair, hosting open-house events across multiple days.

On April 8, 2026, VRChat announced a collaboration between the Strange Pear Gallery and Space Jam 2026.[3] The contest invites fine art submissions through the Strange Pear Discord, with selected works to be featured in a digital fine arts gallery in VRChat.

The gallery regularly collaborates with other VRChat community groups for events. These have included gallery tours by the Femboy Host Club, afterparty raves hosted by The Den at The Pear Grove, comedy events with Punchline Comedy Club, poetry nights with Spoken Heart, and a multi-group music event (P.L.U.R.) with over twelve participating groups in February 2025. The gallery also promotes Art Bar, another VRChat art gallery.[1]

The gallery has had booths at VRChat festivals and conventions, including the Virtual Market (Vket) and Projekt: Community.[1]

Submission guidelines

Artists purchase art slots through the gallery's Ko-fi shop, with up to four pieces per slot. Accepted media include digital illustration, paintings, photography, 3D renders, and 3D models. AI-generated art is prohibited (with some cleared exceptions). A dedicated slot for 3D models was introduced in June 2025. The gallery is restricted to artists and attendees aged 18 and over.[1]

Immersivism

On August 3, 2024, K. Guillory of The MetaCulture gave a presentation at the Strange Pear Gallery on the history of fine art depicting virtual worlds, hosted by Oz Pearsall.[4] The event was followed by a community discussion and public poll to name the emerging art movement. Nineteen name suggestions were compiled by artists at the gallery, and on August 16, 2024, "Immersivism" won by a wide margin. Immersivism is defined as the practice of depicting people, places, and ideas in or of virtual worlds through fine art.[5]

The term independently echoed earlier work by artist Bryn Oh, who had predicted in 2020 that the word "Immersivist" would be used by virtual artists.[2]
