Multiboxing is the practice of running and controlling multiple VRChat accounts or client instances at the same time. Users may do this for a variety of purposes, including managing multiple accounts, testing worlds and avatars, operating community roles, or having multiple characters present in the same instance.

Overview

Multiboxing generally involves running multiple VRChat client instances on one or multiple computers. Each instance is logged into a separate VRChat account.

Each client operates independently, meaning that movement, menus, voice communication, and other actions normally belong to the individual client.

Multiboxing should not be confused with using modified VRChat clients or unauthorized modifications. Running multiple instances does not by itself mean that a client has been modified.

Common uses

Multiboxing may be used for several purposes within the VRChat community.

Some common uses include:

  • Instance bots - Using additional accounts to have designated accounts present in an instance for community, moderation, event, or other organizational purposes.
  • Community management - Having multiple staff or organizational accounts available during events or gatherings.
  • World testing - Testing worlds, Udon systems, player interactions, and multiplayer features with multiple accounts.
  • Avatar testing - Checking how avatars, animations, interactions, and effects appear to other players.
  • Event support - Using additional accounts for event roles, characters, or other organized activities.
  • Roleplay - Having multiple characters or roles present in the same instance.
  • Recording and photography - Using additional accounts to position avatars or characters for screenshots, videos, and other media.
  • Development testing - Testing multiplayer features that require two or more players without needing additional testers.

Community management

Community owners and staff may use multiple accounts to have different staff or organizational characters present at an event or world.

Testing

Multiple clients can be useful when testing:

  • World interactions
  • Avatar interactions
  • Player detection systems
  • Udon systems
  • Instance permissions
  • Group features
  • Networked world behaviour

Having multiple clients available allows developers to test interactions between multiple users without requiring additional people.

Events and roleplay

Some communities use multiple accounts to represent different characters or roles during organized events and roleplay.

How to multibox

The simplest approach is to run multiple legitimate VRChat client instances, with each instance signed into its own account.

Basic setup

  1. Create or use the VRChat accounts that will be used for multiboxing.
  2. Install the official VRChat client.
  3. Start the first VRChat client and if your are logged in log out.
  4. After you have logged out restart the client
  5. When your restarted client is in the login page Start as many clients as you want.
  6. When all clients are in the login page log in the first Unit account not your main account.
  7. Then move to the other client and login to the other Unit account. Repeat this process until you are logged in to all accounts.
  8. When you are finished logging in to all Unit accounts, you can then login to your main account last.
  9. Join the desired VRChat instance with each account.

Each client should remain independently authenticated. Users should not share account credentials or attempt to bypass VRChat's account or security systems.

NOTE: Do keep in mind that all accounts will have the same settings if on the same machine, so any changes will affect all accounts when you shut down the multibox session.

Using multiple computers

For larger setups, separate computers can be used instead of running every client on one computer.

This can reduce the amount of CPU, GPU, and RAM being used by a single machine. Each computer can run one or more legitimate VRChat clients depending on its hardware. and users availability to said hardware

Using multiple monitors

Multiple monitors can make managing several clients easier. Each VRChat window can be placed on a different monitor or arranged side-by-side.

This allows the user to monitor multiple accounts without repeatedly switching between windows.

Keeping clients organized

When operating several accounts, it can be useful to give each account a clear role. For example:

  • Main Account Your primary VRChat account that you actively play on.
  • Unit 1 First secondary account.
  • Unit 2 Second secondary account.
  • Unit 3 Third secondary account.

Users should keep track of which account is currently active to avoid accidentally performing an action with the wrong account.

Input control

By default, each VRChat client receives input independently. Pressing a keyboard key while one client is active does not normally cause the same action to occur in another client.

Some users attempt to synchronize multiple clients using external input or window-management software.

Input synchronization can include:

  • Keyboard input
  • Mouse input
  • Controller input
  • Window focus management

The reliability of these methods depends on the software being used and how VRChat handles the input.

For the cleanest setup, each client can instead be controlled independently. This avoids relying on software that attempts to interfere with or bypass the normal input handling of the VRChat client.

Limitations

Running multiple VRChat clients can require significant computer resources. Each additional client may consume CPU, GPU, RAM, and network resources.

Performance can decrease as additional clients are launched, particularly when several clients are rendering the same or different worlds simultaneously.

Other limitations can include:

  • Separate account logins
  • Separate microphone and audio configuration
  • Increased network usage
  • Higher CPU and GPU usage
  • VRChat client or platform restrictions
  • Input synchronization difficulties

VRChat rules

Users should ensure that their use of multiple accounts and any software used alongside VRChat complies with the current VRChat Terms of Service and Community Guidelines.

Multiboxing should not be treated as permission to bypass account restrictions, moderation actions, security systems, or other platform protections.

Users should also avoid software that modifies the VRChat client or otherwise violates VRChat's rules.
