VRRat

VRRat is a mischievous secondary mascot of VRChat.

Biography

Looks

VRRat is a low-poly rat. He is shades of brown in color with stubby arms and legs.

Personality

Not to be trusted. He also likes cheese. All the time.[1]

Appearances

VRRat first appeared during a VRChat Jam in 2022[2]

During Spookality 2024, VRRat was frequently used in the branding.

On December 1st, 2024, The VRRat Makeship plushie was officially revealed[3].

April Fools 2024 Event

Start of the Event

On the first of April 2024 the official VRChat X (formerly Twitter) Account posted: "UPDATE: We can't find VRRat."[4] followed by: "also DO NOT write 'We miss you VRRat' in your personal user note on the website!"[5].

The Text Adventure

The first message of the adventure

Going against this advice would start a hidden text adventure on the VRChat Website played via the notification menu.

The text-driven adventure tasked the user with freeing VRRat from what appeared to be the VRChat Headquarters.

Navigation depended on a map drawn by VRRat, but its visibility was limited to areas illuminated by a nearby light source. For example, opening the map in a dark tunnel would make it hard to read, in some cases, even unreadable for significant portions of the adventure, adding an extra layer of challenge.

The map provided to the user by VRRat

Gameplay mostly consisted of VRRat describing what he perceived in his current position, followed by the player giving new instructions on where to move next.

The far left side of the map caused a confusion-like effect for VRRat, making communication difficult. In order to finish the game, the user had to find a key, which was hidden in the maze and would later be used to open the door.

Failing the adventure was possible, notably via getting caught by VRCat near the end of the game.

Successfully finishing the text adventure and freeing VRRat unlocked the "CHEESE" Badge and temporarily set the UI theme on the website to the Cheese theme.

VRRat takeover

Throughout the day, VRRat seemingly took control of VRChat's X account, posting various memes, humorous comments and "leaking" confidential VRChat data.[6][7]

Event conclusion

The event concluded on April 2nd, 2024, with the VRChat X account - now back 'under the control' of Tupper - announcing the successful containment of VRRat.[8]

Trivia

  • VRRat appears on VRChat Wiki articles marked with Category:Stubs.
  • According to an official Twitter thread for VRChat's 10th anniversary in January 2024, VRRat was created during a VRChat Jam in 2022 as an NPC that disciplined banned users sent to the Banned World. If a banned user entered the world and broke VRRat’s only rule (Don’t touch my cheese!), they would attack you, and you would sink into the ground and turn into cheese.[9]
  • VRChat has a hidden text adventure game featuring VRRat!
  • VRRat's arch-enemy is VRCat.
    • A video posted by VRChat showcasing the new festive stickers show VRCat comforting VRRat after feeling left out of holiday activities, showcasing potentially the development of a closer relationship[10].
