Steam Audio is a real-time spatial audio solution developed by Valve Corporation. It simulates how sound waves travel, reflect, and occlude in three-dimensional environments. By leveraging geometry-based propagation and Head-Related Transfer Functions, it delivers immersive audio experiences. Its features include occlusion modeling, dynamic reverb, and virtual surround sound.

Steam Audio switched to an open source model in February 2024.[1].

Overview

While Steam Audio has advanced audio features that can be used by world creators, these will not be included during the initial release, as the goal is to match ONSP behaviour as close as possible.

History

Steam Audio has been in development since 2020, with the first build releasing under a closed beta on December 18, 2020.[2]. During closed beta, it was under development under the "noise" branch.[3]

Steam Audio was officialy announced on March 13, 2025 on the Developer Update, with the Open Beta releasing on March 19.[4].
