Tramite l'ausilio di [[Special:MyLanguage/Avatar|avatar]] gli utenti riescono ad avvicinarsi alla loro [[wikipedia:Gender identity|identità di genere]], o a sperimentare con generi diversi dai loro. Le identità di genere che gli avatar possono esprimere sono molte, tra cui: femminilità, [[wikipedia:Androgyny|androgenicità]] e mascolinità, permettendo così di esprimersi in modi difficilmente realizzabili in vita reale.

Avvolte però, alcuni utenti potrebbero non identififcarsi con il genere che il loro avatar presenta. Infatti, alcuni uomini cisgender potrebbero utilizzare un avatar dalle parvenze femminili per caratteristiche dell'avatar in sè, come il vestiario, accessori o per un gusto nel suo aspetto. L'[[wikipedia:Proteus_effect|effetto Proteus]] descrive il fenomeno dell'identificazione dell'individuo nell'aspetto dei suoi avatar, con conseguente cambiamento del comportamento e dell'autopercezione nel mondo virtuale. Questo fenomeno permette una più agevole affermazione della propria [[wikipedia:Gender identity|identità di genere]] in modi che non potrebbero essere possibili o viabili nella vita di tutti i giorni. Tramite l'uso di avatar che rispecchiano un genere diverso dal proprio e o che differiscono dai costumi quotidiani, permette di approcciarsi ad un'aspetto di sè che potrebbe esser stato, altrimenti, soppresso. Attraverso l'interazione con persone di diverso genere è possibile modificare o anche rivalutare la propria percezione del genere, conferendo così la conoscenza necessaria ad avere la mente aperta verso l'identità e all'espressione.
