The Backrooms is a cross-platform game world published by Friday1 is the most popular backrooms-themed world. Players explore levels, survive encounters, and solve puzzles. Progress is saved as each level is completed.

Layout

Players spawn in an instruction area. A How to Play board covers the pocket menu, elevator checkpoints, and notes. Desktop opens the pocket menu with Tab. In VR, the menu opens by putting the hands together, holding both triggers, and pulling apart. Boards at spawn also cover credits, links, speedrun rules, statistics, and Patreon tiers. A friends finder and a video panel sit in the same area. The spawn door has to be opened before checkpoint teleports unlock.

Elevators are checkpoints. Interacting with an elevator unlocks it as a fast-travel point. Spawn, Yellow Offices, Blue Offices, White Offices, and Portal are among the named points. Other labelled areas include The Lobby, The Hotel, The Overlook, Prison, Tunnels, and Factory.

Zone 1, Zone 2, and Zone 3 are marked on in-world boards. A maintenance-sector warning names a hostile entity. A beacon there flashes red when the entity approaches. Posted instructions tell players to take a flashbeacon, use it in the tunnels, and locate an active power switch marked by white indicator lights. Other boards read power failure with the exit door offline, and emergency evacuation.

Notes are scattered through the world. Found notes can be reread from the Notes tab of the pocket menu. The menu groups them as personal logs, employee files, and directives and clues.

All Access raises jump height and opens small private rooms off the main path. VIP adds run speed. VIP+ adds teleport to friends and experimental controls: location persistence, fullbright, and noclip. Those experimental controls carry an in-world warning that they can break the game. Location persistence disables the speedrun timer.

Gameplay

Level progress, statistics, and speedrun times save with Persistence. The Data menu can clear level progress, statistics, speedrun times, or all saved data. Statistics track playtime, distance walked in kilometres, jumps, and completed runs. Distance ignores teleports and large jumps. Stats write to the account every five seconds.

A speedrun timer starts when a player walks through the starting door at spawn. It stops at the end trigger. The personal board keeps the five fastest times and their dates. The timer can finish once per instance visit. Rejoining the instance allows another run. Official board rules require clearing level data before a timed run and submitting video to Discord.

A Must Find board in Zone 1 asks for three fire extinguishers, then a lever. Zone 2's board asks for three laptops, then a lever. A Zone 3 note highlights three cakes. Completing a level shows a teleport prompt.

Achievements are First Steps (travel 10 km), Marathon Runner (travel 100 km), Kangaroo (jump 1,000 times), Lost (spend 1 hour in the world), and Speed Demon (complete 5 runs).

The world is enrolled in the Creator Economy. The world store sells a Portable Radio listing and a Colored Radio Skins Pack. The radio is taken out from the Music icon on the pocket menu. Nearby players can hear a loaded URL or a preset station.
