Boops is a social feature, allowing users to send a "boop" to friends, with an attached emoji. The recipient will be notified having received a Boop, with a notification and a Boop Explosion if attached with an emoji.
Overview
Boops can be sent in-client by viewing a profile on either the Main Menu or Quick Menu or, and selecting the "Boop" button. They also be sent through the mobile companion app (Android only) by selecting the button with the boop icon on a user's profile. These buttons will bring up an emoji selector, that sorts emoji by category.
Users can choose a default emoji to attach along with the boop, and VRC+ subscribers have the option to attach custom emoji. When sent, the recipient will receive a notification showing that they have been booped. If the boop is attached with an emoji, when the recipient opens up their notifications tab, it will play a Boop Explosion.
Boop Explosions are a particle effect that "blasts" multiple of the sent emoji in front of their avatar.

Booping was initially revealed in the May 30th, 2024's Developer Update, allowing friends to send a "boop" to each other. This could have been attached with any emoji.
The feature was implemented into the Open Beta branch on June 6th, 2024 for twelve days. The feature was never released to Live, and was only an Open Beta feature. Due to mixed community reception, the feature was removed on June 18th with the following message on the official VRChat Discord:
No Booping No More
If you were paying attention to previous builds, you might've noticed there's something missing from this update: Booping. That's intentional. While we were excited about testing the feature, it was clear that folks weren't into it.
We're not interested in forcing a feature on the community that they're not into, so we're pulling it. In the future, we might try testing a reworked version of Booping, but it's unlikely to be something we try for awhile.
While it didn't quite go the way we wanted it to, we still appreciate the candid and honest feedback from the community.
Re-introduction in 2025
On October 16, 2025, the Boops feature was re-introduced to the 2025.4.1[1] Open Beta, from subsequent community feedback from users who enjoyed the feature. The following message on the VRChat Discord server was posted:
Boops are BACK!
Boops are back! You might remember this feature from last year, when we tried it out in Open Beta... only to decide that it wasn't quite ready yet.
After we announced we pulled it, people immediately wanted it back! Well, it took a hot second, but here it is again!
Booping is a feature that allows you to send "Boops" to their friends! They can attach any emoji to their Boop! VRC+ subscribers can even attach custom and animated emojis.
When the recipient opens their notifications, they'll see a Boop Explosion containing all of the Boops they've just received!
Boops can be sent by opening the User Details page in either the Quick Menu or Main Menu in the Client and tapping the new Boop button. They can also be sent also from within the mobile apps.
On November 3, 2025, Boops became fully integrated with the VRChat client for the 2025.4.1[2] update.
