VRChat Developer Updates, or "Dev Updates" are public announcements directed to VRChat users by the VRChat Team, acknowledging information on upcoming or recent features or changes, product releases, current and future events and partnerships, or addressing community feedback.

Overview

Developer Updates are always posted to the Ask Forums and sometimes additionally on YouTube, once every other Thursday to cover patch notes, or announcements. Past developer updates took the form of either a blog post, or video format. However, modern developer updates are often streamlined to include both.

When the VRChat client receives an update, an Open Beta branch, or an announcement regarding server issues, an announcement will typically be posted on their respective Discord servers, but alternatively can appear on their social media profiles. Developer Updates will summarize any releases that happen between posts.

History

Since 2016, VRChat's developer updates have been posted on several outlets, and have also gone through different names. Former developer updates have been called Developer Blogs, Community Updates, and Town Hall Meetings.

VRChat have posted their Developer Updates on the following outlets over the years:

  • VRChat Blog: January 20, 2022 - Current (less frequently)
  • Ask Forum: May 4, 2020 - Current
  • YouTube: April 18, 2018 - Current
  • Steampowered: February 1, 2017 - Current (less frequently)
  • Medium: April 11, 2016 - January 18, 2022

Legend

Build: The VRChat client live build at the time of the Developer Update.

Format: The media format that the Developer Update was published in; text format, and/or video format.

Implemented: These describe new additions, and changes or updates (patchnotes), for features within the VRChat SDK, VRChat websites, or the VRChat client or app.

Reminders: Summarizes recurring announcements, as well as content that may not be 'official VRChat news'.

Announced: This column contains content means that a feature, feature update, or event was announced, and was not yet released or available at the time of the announcement.
